Our mission
Everyone is different. Everyone deserves a learning platform that adapts to where they actually are, whether or not their family has money. We think that's the most meaningful way to close the gap that money opens in education.
What we want to solve
Most school systems are built to find out who is good and who isn't. We want a system that teaches every student from where they are.
Students are measured again and again by exams whose main job is to rank them. The results decide who moves ahead, but they rarely change how anyone is taught.
A real education system uses what it learns about a student to teach that student better. That's the educational purpose exams were supposed to serve.
A single classroom holds students at very different levels. When everyone moves at one pace with little individual attention, the students who start behind fall further behind.
They lose confidence first. Some eventually stop trying, and some leave school altogether.
Families who can afford it hire tutors who adapt to their child. Everyone else gets the same one-size lesson, whatever their child needs.
That gap in resources is decided by income, not by ability or effort. It's the gap we most want to close.
Open education
We believe in open education: learning that's centered on the student, not on the syllabus.
Learners' interests and goals come first. Students choose their own content and path instead of passively receiving information.
Learning isn't confined to one room or one timetable. It happens wherever and whenever a student is ready.
Teachers shift from delivering the same lecture to everyone toward guiding each student through what they need next.
Good learning material should be widely shared, not locked behind the families and schools that can pay for it.
In basic education, open classrooms build critical thinking: students question, explore and reason instead of memorizing.
Learning continues outside school and after it, for students far from good schools and for adults returning to learn.
The gap we want to fill
Open education opened the doors. It didn't make learning adapt.
Coursera is one of the most prominent examples of the open education model, and it put excellent courses within reach of anyone with an internet connection. That matters.
But each class runs at one level. The teacher teaches from beginning to end without adjusting to what the learner already knows or keeps getting wrong. A student who's ahead is held back, and a student who's behind is left behind. That's the gap AdaptSage fills.
Everyone gets the same lessons in the same order, wherever they start.
Each learner starts where they are and gets what they need next, on their way to the same goal.
Social impact
An affordable system for equal education opportunities.
A good tutor adapts to one student at a high hourly price. Software can adapt to every student at a small fraction of that cost, so what used to be a luxury can be ordinary.
Every country teaches and tests differently. Our goal is an adaptive system built for each country's own curriculum, lowering the bar to good learning resources wherever a student lives.
Finding out where a student stands shouldn't cost anything. That's why our first product starts with a free diagnostic and a free full-length practice test.
Where we are today
We're starting with one exam, and building for all of them.
AdaptSHSAT, our first product, prepares NYC students for the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test. It finds the specific reasoning mistake behind each wrong answer and keeps working on it until it's fixed.
The same engine can serve any subject where reasoning can be checked. These are the directions we're exploring. We'll only call something live when it is.
